Volunteers & Parent/Carer Helpers

Rationale

The nursery recognises the benefits of volunteers and parent/carer helpers.

Aim

To provide clear guidance for volunteers and parent/carer helpers during the time they assist nursery staff.

Objective

To ensure volunteer and parent/carer helpers, are clear regarding nursery expectations.

To ensure good practice regarding the safety and welfare of children.

Guidelines

Whenever volunteers and parent/carers are helping either in the nursery or out on trips the following applies:

A member of staff must always accompany the volunteer and parent/carer.

Volunteers and parent/carers should never take a child anywhere in/out of the nursery on their own unless it is their own child.

A volunteer can not accompany a child to the toilet unless it is their own child.

Volunteers and parent/carers should encourage the children to do as much as possible for themselves.

Volunteers and parent/carers should treat all children equally.

Volunteers and parent/carers should not give children food without checking with a member of staff.

Volunteers and parent/carers should not discuss nursery children with other parents/carers or their own children. Volunteers and parent/carers should always relay any information/enquiries to a member of staff who will then speak to the parent/carer if required.

If volunteers and parent/carers have any concerns about a child, then they must speak to a member of staff.

Success Criteria

Volunteers and parent/carer helpers are clear about what nursery staff expect them to do when they are helping in the nursery or on outings.
